Itinerary Highlights

Each day of the 6-day Machame Route climb brings new challenges and stunning views as you make your way to Uhuru Peak:

  • Day 0: Arrival in Moshi

    Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Meet with your guide for a detailed briefing and equipment check, where you’ll review safety measures, tips for a successful trek, and what to expect from the journey ahead.

  • Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

    Start your trek at Machame Gate. Ascend through dense rainforest where you’ll experience lush vegetation, unique wildlife, and beautiful scenery. Reach Machame Camp by late afternoon and settle in for the night.

    Elevation: 1800m/5905ft to 2835m/9300ft

    Distance: 11km/7mi

    Walking Time: 5-7 hours

    Habitat: Rainforest

    Meals: Lunch and Dinner

  • Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

    Continue your ascent as you leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorlands. The landscape changes dramatically, with fewer trees and more shrubs and rocky terrain. At Shira Camp, enjoy stunning views of Mount Meru and the peak of Kilimanjaro.

    Elevation: 2835m/9300ft to 3750m/12,300ft

    Distance: 5km/3.1mi

    Walking Time: 4-5 hours

    Habitat: Moorland

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

  • Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

    Ascend gradually to Lava Tower, where you'll reach a high point of 4600m. This day is crucial for acclimatization. Afterward, descend to Barranco Camp, surrounded by imposing cliffs and known for the unique “Senecio” plants.

    Elevation: 3750m/12,300ft to 4600m/15,100ft (Lava Tower) then down to 3900m/12,800ft

    Walking Time: 6-8 hours

  • Day 4: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

    Begin the day by scaling the famous Barranco Wall, a challenging but rewarding climb. Continue through the alpine desert to Barafu Camp, where you’ll prepare for your midnight summit attempt. Rest and hydrate well to gear up for the final ascent.

    Elevation: 3900m/12,800ft to 4673m/15,331ft

    Distance: 9km/5.6mi

    Walking Time: 7-8 hours

    Habitat: Alpine Desert

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

  • Day 5: Summit Attempt to Uhuru Peak, then descent to Mweka Camp

    Start the summit push at midnight. Reach Stella Point for the sunrise, and continue to Uhuru Peak at 5895m, the highest point in Africa. After a triumphant summit, descend back to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved rest.

    Elevation: 4673m/15,331ft to 5895m/19,341ft (Uhuru Peak), then descend to 3100m/10,170ft

    Distance: 16km/9.9mi

    Walking Time: 10-12 hours

    Habitat: Arctic to Rainforest

  • Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

    Enjoy a final descent through the rainforest as you complete your Kilimanjaro adventure at Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive a certificate of achievement.
